Bible Word of the Day

Dross (Impurities of Fine Metal)

Meaning
Dross is a word which refers to the impurities which float on the top of melted metals. In the process of refining fine metals like silver and gold, they are melted down into liquid form. The impurities which are lighter than the fine metals create a scum which floats on the service of the liquid metal. These impurities are then skimmed and thrown away. And in the process of melting silver, the dross could consist of a silvery lead monoxide, which was also used as a glaze to coat ceramics.

However, in the Bible the word "dross" is used in reference to the wicked who will suffer the judgment of God. Throughout the Bible, especially in the Old Testament we are told that at the time of God's judgment, the wicked like dross will be gathered and thrown away. Because of their wickedness and rebellion against God, like dross they are useless and will be destroyed.

Take away the dross from silver, And it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. Take away the wicked from before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness." (Book of Proverbs 25:4-5)

"You put away all the wicked of the earth like dross; Therefore I love Your testimonies." (Book of Psalms 119:119)

"I will turn My hand against you, And thoroughly purge away your dross, And take away all your alloy." (Book of Isaiah 119:119)
