Bible Word of the Day

Aquila and Priscilla (Apostle Paul’s Co-Workers in Christ)

Meaning
Aquila and Priscilla were a husband and wife team, friends of the Apostle Paul and fellow Christians. They served alongside the Apostle Paul as coworkers helping Paul in the spread of the Gospel. These were the two people who first heard Apollos speak while in Ephesus and pulled him aside to explain the Gospel more clearly to him. Apollos was an Alexandrian Jewish Christian who became an evangelist, an apologist, church leader, and friend of the Apostle Paul. Aquila, a Jewish Christian, and his wife, Priscilla, first met Paul in Corinth, became good friends of his, and shared in his work. They helped Paul with his ministry in the cities of Corinth, Ephesus and Rome and it’s believed that Aquila also worked as a tent maker and that’s how he and Paul had met.

The Apostle Paul was a tent maker by trade and often worked in the profession to support himself during his missionary journeys. It’s interesting to note that even though the Apostle Paul was trained as a Pharisee it was Jewish custom that Pharisees also learn a second trade in case they needed to support themselves outside of Jerusalem and the surroundings of Temple Worship. In the Bible the husband and wife pair are always listed as “Priscilla and Aquila” with the wife’s name listed first. Many believe this was because of her wealth, social status or prominence within Christian circles. In other words, for some reason she was more well-known and therefore is listed first in the New Testament epistles.

“And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome); and he came to them.” (Book of Acts 18:2)

“So Paul still remained a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow.” (Book of Acts 18:18)

“So he [Apollos] began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” (Book of Acts 18:26)
