Bible Word of the Day
Doxology (Hymn, Salutation)
Meaning
A doxology can be a special prayer, blessing or praise placed within scripture. This can occur at the beginning, middle or end of a set of passages. Normally a doxology will either appear as part of the salutation at the beginning of a set of passages, or in the closing sections of scripture. In addition, doxologies are usually sung by the congregation at the opening or close of worship services. Moreover, as we read scripture we see that these praises to God are sung by all of God’s creation. Within the Bible see both angels and mankind, giving praises to God in the form of doxologies.
“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?’ ‘Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?’ For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.” (Book of Romans 11:33-36)
“John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Revelation 1:4-6)
“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men” (Gospel of Like 2:14)
