Bible Word of the Day
Bealoth (Female Baals)
Meaning
This name was used both as a name of a town and in reference to idolatry. In idolatry this name referred to female deities or goddesses, female Baals. The city named Bealoth is mentioned once or twice in the Bible. Bealoth was situated somewhere in the southern extremity of the territory of Judah, close to Edom or modern day Jordan. Many scholars equate this town with Baal. The name Bealoth is the plural form of the feminine noun for Baal and it means to exercise dominion over, or to be lord over. This name stems from the type of idolatry practiced in this town and most likely involved temple prostitution as a form of worshiping the goddesses.
“The cities at the limits of the tribe of the children of Judah, toward the border of Edom in the South, were Kabzeel… Bealoth” (Book of Joshua 15:22-24)
