Bible Word of the Day
Breath of Life (God Given Life to Our Soul and Spirit)
Meaning
The phrase used in the Bible, “the breath of life” is what was given by God to all people, to give them life and a soul. The Bible tells us when God formed Adam out of the dust, God breathed into him the “breath of life” and made him into a living being. Moreover, God made Adam, and therefore humanity, in the image of God. Mankind does not just have a physical body, but we also have a soul and a spirit. This is what is referred to as the “Dichotomy of Man.” In addition, the “breath of life” as given by God, brings with it, a new spirit which makes us sensitive to the Lord and the things of God. We see this in Ezekiel’s vision, which tells us that God in the last days, will breathe the “breath of life” into the dry bones of Israel, once again making them a nation and placing them into the family of nations. We ourselves have witnessed this in 1948, when God out of the dust of history, formed Israel once again into a nation among men.
And in the end times God’s “breath of life” will bring the entire nation of Israel to faith in Christ. The term “the breath of life” not only refers to the fact that we have life, but also includes the fact that God has given us life, with a body, soul and a spirit. All of this together was given to mankind by the “breath of life” which God breathed into us. This gift comes from Jesus who the Bible tells us is the Author of creation and through Him we also have eternal life. In summary the “breath of life” is the life and power of God, given to man to animate him. The Hebrew word for spirit is “Ruach”, which means “wind, breath, air, spirit” and speaks both of our living bodies and spirit.
“Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
“Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.” (Genesis 6:17)
