Brimstone (Burning Sulfur)
Meaning
Brimstone is also known as burning sulfur, which is a non-metallic combustible mineral substance which is emitted usually by volcanic activity. In the near east (middle-east area) there have been large deposits of brimstone found. Brimstone is mentioned several times throughout the Old Testament and was often seen as part of God’s judgment.
It was first mentioned in the book of Genesis chapter nineteen with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorra. Also brimstone is mentioned in God’s description of the “Lake of Fire.” The “Lake of Fire” is the final destination of Satan, the fallen angels and all those who rebelled against God and died having rejected Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
“Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord. Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.” (Genesis 19:24-25, 27-28)
