Bible Word of the Day
Adam (The First Person Created by God)
Meaning
The Bible gives us the names of three of his children, Cain, Abel, and Seth; however, we must remember Adam and Eve had many other sons and daughters which were not mentioned in the Book of Genesis. So it’s incorrect to think Adam and Eve only had three children because that’s all the Bible mentions. The word Adam means “red” or “red soil” and Adam was absolutely the first man whom God created. He was formed out of the dust of the earth and hence his name, red like the dirt and clay. God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and gave him dominion over all creatures. He was placed after his creation in the Garden of Eden, to cultivate it, and to enjoy its fruits.
But Adam had one prohibition. God said, “Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shall not eat of it; for in the day that thou eat thereof thou shall surely die.” And by death, God meant both a spiritual death which happened immediately as his relationship with God was broken as well as a physical death which would come later. We have to remember before the fall Adam lived in a perfect world and the intent may have been for Adam to live forever. The first recorded act of Adam was his giving names to the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, which God brought to him for this end. After which the Lord caused a deep sleep to fall upon him, and while in an unconscious state God took one of his ribs, and closed up his flesh again; and of this rib he made a woman, whom he presented to him when he awoke. The name woman means “taken from man.”
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’ Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.'” (Book of Genesis 2:7,18-23)
“This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.” (Book of Genesis 5:1-5)
