Meaning
When the Bible speaks of compass directions such as North, South, East and West we have to first understand the Bible’s frame of reference. And in order to understand that we must remember that the Jewish people are God’s chosen people. Moreover the nation of Israel is God’s chosen nation. The nation of Israel and her people are the one place out of the entire world which God chose to place His mark. It is the one place which God has claimed as His very own. Therefore, Jerusalem is the center of God’s compass. All compass directions given within the Bible, especially in the Old Testament and end-time prophecy are given in relationship to the position of Israel. And not just Israel, but the Temple as well. In other words, when the scripture speaks of things “to the North,” it means to the north of Israel. And the same is true with the other compass directions of South, East and West.
“Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Jeremiah, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘I see a branch of an almond tree.’ Then the Lord said to me, ‘You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word.’ And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, ‘What do you see?’ And I said, ‘I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.’ Then the Lord said to me: ‘Out of the north calamity shall break forth On all the inhabitants of the land. For behold, I am calling All the families of the kingdoms of the north,’ says the Lord; ‘They shall come and each one set his throne At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, Against all its walls all around, And against all the cities of Judah.” (Book of Jeremiah 1:11-15)
“Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the River Chebar, that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. On the fifth day of the month, which was in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity, the word of the Lord came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was upon him there. Then I looked, and behold, a whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire.” (Book of Ezekiel 1:11-15)
“For out of the north a nation comes up against her, Which shall make her land desolate, And no one shall dwell therein. They shall move, they shall depart, Both man and beast. ‘In those days and in that time,’ says the Lord, ‘The children of Israel shall come, They and the children of Judah together; With continual weeping they shall come, And seek the Lord their God.” (Book of Jeremiah 50:3-4)
