The Destroyer (Angel Who Carries Out God’s Wrath)
Meaning
The term “Destroyer” used both in the Old and New Testaments had a very specific meaning. And they both referred to an angel (and more than likely two different angels) who carried out the wrath of God. The term is used both generically as in the book of Jeremiah and specifically as in the book of Exodus and the book of Revelation. However, in every case the scripture speaks of God’s wrath carried out on the unrepentant. The book of Revelation the name of the angel is “Abaddon” in the Hebrew and “Apollyon” in the Greek. Both names mean “Destroyer.”
“The lion has come up from his thicket, And the destroyer of nations is on his way. He has gone forth from his place To make your land desolate. Your cities will be laid waste, Without inhabitant.” (Book of Jeremiah 4:7)
“For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you.” (Book of Exodus 12:23)
“And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.” (Book of Revelation 9:11)
