Creeping Things (Hebrew Word, “Remes”)
Meaning
The term “creeping things” which is used in the Bible is the Hebrew word “remes.” And this refers to the category of creation which includes reptiles, insects and small animals which live close to the earth. As well as those things which live on or in the ground. The creeping things create their own class of animals as distinguished in the Bible. Examples of other classes of animals include livestock, large animals, fishes and birds. All of the various classes of animals taken together, distinguish themselves as living things and not plant life. And it’s amazing when you think about how many times “creeping things” are mentioned in the Bible, especially the Old Testament. This shows us God’s love and concern for even the smallest details of life.
“And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.'” (Book of Genesis 1:25-26)
“So the Lord said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.'” (Book of Genesis 6:7)
“Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.” (Book of Genesis 6:7)
