Bible Word of the Day
Amen (Verify, Agree)
Meaning
This is a word we see ending many of our Bible passages, prayers and worship songs sung in church. This word is a transliteration from a Hebrew word which means, “to verify, to confirm or agree with.” It also means, “let it be so.” Interesting enough, this word was pretty much spelled the same way in the Hebrew, Greek and Latin. Moreover, this word was used in four different ways in Biblical times. First it was used to agree with a command given by a king or a leader. Second to agree with a prophecy given by the Lord. Third to agree and abide by a solemn oath or covenant. And fourth as a concluding endorsement of an entire book or letter of the Bible.
We use it much the same way today, which is to give an affirming response and agreement with God and His word. To give heartfelt thanks and praise to God in our worship. In the book of Revelation to the Letter of Laodicea Jesus is called, “The Amen!” This is to affirm that Jesus is the one and only true and faithful witness of God the Father. The usage of the word “Amen” is important and crucial to our Christian faith because it signifies a wholehearted worship and commitment to Jesus and God’s word the Bible. As the Bible tells us the power of “Amen” is rooted in Christ Jesus our Lord, who is the source and the “Yes” to all of God’s promises made in His word the Bible.
“Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Cursed is the man who does not heed the words of this covenant which I commanded your forefathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Listen to My voice, and do according to all which I command you; so you shall be My people, and I will be your God, in order to confirm the oath which I swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day’ Then I said, ‘Amen, O LORD.'” (Book of Jeremiah 11:3-5)
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.” (Book of Revelation 22:20-21)
